Whampoh's Handmade Noodles

Try this long queue dry handmade noodles @ whampoh food centre - only if you are a fiery hot chilli eater. Without teary eyes and a nose tap, you may not enjoy this dish as much if you ordered the non-chilli version.

Dry Handmade Noodles - with pacific clams ($3)

Marks & Spencer @ Centrepoint

This used to be a fave place i hang out with my sec close frens, after a long day's shopping. We'll sit here, order a huge pot of tea, and spend hours sipping tea. Everytime i sit here now gives me nostalgic reminiscence of my growing-up days.

Oh ya, the scones here are pretty good too - have them warmed up for you!

new foodcourt @ bugis junction

i was so surprised by the facelift in bugis junction - okay more than facelift - some of the little cafes / stalls i like is gone. One is the crystal jade macau - i like their pork buns. hee. and gosh, the food junction is gone too! it's now replaced by rows of new eateries. and the food court is now on the 3rd floor of parco bugis - very chic.

wanted to check out if the dessert stall that sells one of the best beancurd barley is still ard - and lo and behold, the answer is no. there is a dessert stall but the beancurd barley looks vastly different. damn.

ordered some chicken chop from the long queue western stall. food is not bad, mushroom soup is eeky. should have ordered the grilled chicken spaghetti bolognaise that everyone else ordered - that really looks good. okay - for next time!

desserts are quite expensive - think about $3 for most desserts. sigh, not worth a second try.

Kinara @ Suntec

This is actually Kinara's 'stall' @ Suntec foodcourt (Kinara has a grp of restaurants incl Gorkha Grill - see my archived posting). And man, this must be one of the jewels i can ever find in foodcourts -- it's soooo delicious! My bf first discovered this little gem about a year ago and life has never been the same :) For about $5.50 or $6, you can get a set meal like this:

Okay this is supposedly Murgh Makhani (butter chicken) but there is no more chicken in the gravy, so they put it on the side for me instead ( and i realised they use the tandoori chicken pieces for the butter chicken!!) so they'll dump it into the gravy when they ran out of chicky.

Chose some potato veg to go with it. Love the dhal and the freshly made naan.

Okay la, i just love north indian cuisine ;) so quite biased

Jap food @ Circular Road

Our usual haunt (with my ex-colleagues) closed down recently and a new jap restaurant sprouted in its place. Serve quite simple and decent japanese food at very reasonable prices - considering the chic interior decor, with a LCD TV outside showcasing their cuisine. A set like this costs only about $8.50 with free flow of green tea thrown in FOC.

Nabeyaki Udon with tempura and green tea pudding

Value for $$$!

Soup Restaurant @ AMK Hub

Went with my family to Soup Restaurant @ AMK hub. Interestingly i got back the same round table as my last visit (with my sec school friends a couple of months ago). Hee. Man, it was so crowded and they don't take reservations. There was a snaking queue outside.

Their specialty Sam Sui chicken. I always like this dish: succulent chicken with ginger sauce wrapped in lettuce! Yum! Only sad thing is that i know the succulence comes from the forced fed lifestyle of the caged chickens.

Sliced fish stirfry with beansprouts: I hardly see any fish slices, it's all beansprouts. Crap.

From bottom clockwise,
Tofu with prawns in sweet sour sauce: Prawns are succulent
Stewed Chicken breast with roasted pork and tofu: Chicken breast is chicken BITS.
Broccoli with scallops: Only about 3-4 small scallops, but overall ok
Beggar Pork ribs: My mum likes this dish, she says the ribs are very tender, but brother says there's very little meat on the ribs, compared to usual bbq ribs.
Homemade tofu in soy sauce: This is pretty good, just fresh silken tofu in soy sauce.

Soup of the day: Winter melon soup with pork ribs
I kinda like it cos the winter melon is all dissolved into the soup - indicating that it's well-broiled.

Cafe Iguana @ Riverside Point

Went to Cafe Iguana for Mexican food with my DG friends, organised by little boy Shuxiang.

Lime Margarita: Refreshing cooler :)

My Flank Beef Fajitas: Beef is nicely medium done ( though it gets cooked rapidly on the hot plate), good with the grilled vege, guacamole, salsa and sour cream all wrapped in a fajita wrap ( they gave 4 pieces).

Something like this: to fold over.

My bf's Tuna enchiladas: Grilled tuna with salsa, with a good portion of those black beans, and herb rice. Nice!

5 Star Chicken Rice @ Katong

After checking the defects at our new house, we head to katong for dinner cos it's nearby and i was very hungry. Was really spoilt for choices and in the end we settled to try the 5 star Kampung chicken - i've passed by so many times but have never tried. And it was indeed a good decision!

We had White chicken, Roast chicken, Winter Melon Pork ribs soup, and Chicken feet.
The kampung chicken is less meaty and tougher, but tasty. I like it as it's free-ranging and not some battery chicken forced fed in cages. The soup is really very good, considering it's at a chicken stall. But my bf says the chicken feet here , or rather in spore generally, pales in comparison to those in HK. He couldn't find good chicken feet here.

Their funny wet tissue!

Beng Hiang @ Amoy Street

Felt greedy one day and decided to head to Beng Hiang for lunch. It's a very very old Hokkien restaurant, and the customers were mostly of the golden age. Asked some of my colleagues along - 7 of us in total. We ordered some specialties:

Ha Zor Ngor Hiang: Prawn roll & Ngor Hiang is so-so. Nice but average.

Crispy tofu with pork floss: Very nice, Crisp on the outside, very soft inside. Yum!

Oyster omelette: Very crispy egg & batter. Diff from usual egg omelette, you can't taste the chewy batter cos it's all crispy. Oysters are nicely done - succulent. But i don't quite fancy the sauce though. Still prefer the egg omelette from Old Airport...heh.

Hokkien fried Mee Sua: Quite nice.

Their famous Hokkien mee: quite nice too.

Stewed Pork buns: This is pretty good... i love the creamy fats from the stew pork. Yum! I miss my mum's stew pork buns. Heh, now she'll say it's unhealthy! haha.

Complimentary barley with gingko nuts and beancurd skin. Quite watery but still ok.

Nogawa @ Le Meridian

Bf wanted to bring me here on several occasions but didn't quite work out, but alas, we finally made it after all these while :) heheh. It was his thanks to me for preparing the xmas dinner for him. And it was such a wonderful thanks. hehhehe.

The dishes we ordered are recommended by the friendly waitress:

1) Compulsory appetiser: Anglerfish liver in Shoyu and lime sauce. ($10 for 2)
While the fish looks quite scary, the liver is known to be a great delicacy, costing USD100 for the liver in Japan; the fish costs USD150.
Indeed this is very delicious, a slight pungent taste common to pate.

This is how an angler looks like - by the way, my bf was so pleasantly surprised they served such a deep-water ugly fish here. He wanted to try it but i was not too keen... :(

Here's another picture of Anglerfish from Wikipedia, lest you can't see properly the repulsive hideous look of the fish, and wonder why i just can't eat it in the hot pot! ( they don't serve deep fried version that evening...)

2) Ikura (salmon roe) $15: My fave! They claim to scoop the roe out from the salmon over in this restaurant kitchen, such that the freshness is unrivalled (unless of cos we're in salmon fishing nations). Yes it indeed tastes slightly different: less pungent than usual ikura.

3) Sashimi $80: Tuna, Tuna belly, Puffer fish, Puffer fish skin, Shrimps, Clams, Scallops, Aki etc.

Puffer fish

A japanese waitress (who could hardly speak Eng) dunk some of these herbs into our soy sauce, supposedly to add flavor to the sashimi.

My bf eating.
3) Tuna Belly Soup $50: See the claypot (above), and Soup (below).
Cooked tuna belly looks like pork. Heh. But it melts in the mouth. Yum!

4) Grilled Yellowtail cheek $25: Pretty nice and interesting to eat with the pickles. Lotsa meat.

Funny teapot converted into a flower vase

5) Grilled young Bamboo shoots ( $18): Very delicious with a sweet paste on top of it. But a bit costly at $18 for 3 small pieces.

Individual platter for desserts. Houjicha (baked green tea) is served instead of the usual green tea (ocha)

6) Red bean soup with chestnut and dumpling cake ($8): To dump everything into the soup. This is very very good!!

7) Plum wine Jelly ($8): My bf's fave! He saved this for the last. Haha.
The plum wine is made in-house. Very nice and refreshing!

Look how happy and satisfied he is!

The lady in blue kimono is that jap lady who showed us how to wrap the puffer fish and added the herbs for us. She spend most of the evening entertaining jap clients. The rest of the waitstaff wore pink kimonos.

The outside of the restaurant.

Bill is $254 but it's all worthwhile :)

Yummy Yogurt @ Square2

Yummy Yogurt, Yum! I'm always a fan of their peach flavor, but bf has since influenced me to have their natural one. Had this while waiting for him... :P

Only regret is that it's a tat too little for $2.30. Heh. It's like only a mouthful.

This is macadamia nut flavor.....it is surprisingly very nice!

TCC @ Circular Road

PooPoo says she's feeling rich one day and insisted we go have some drinks after lunch - her treat. She ordered Mango Freeze and i ordered Green Tea milkshake. Hmm, but not as good as we expected.

Rating: d for the drinks

Old Airport Food Centre

This chee cheong fun is my all-time favourite at Old Airport Fd centre, apart from the oyster omelette by a granny (which was so crisp and so fragrant). $2 for each portion of prawn/charsiew/mushroom chee cheong fun; Scallop is $2.50.

Ordered prawn & char siew :) Pork & century egg congee from same stall too.
Ha Zor (Prawn rolls) are from another popular stall, but i found it only so-so.
Rating: ddd (chee cheong fun)

Commercial Break

Take a break, have a kit-kat! :)

Office 1: My plushtoy giraffe carrying a chocobar and sitting on a pack of chips.

Office 2: Was drinking water in the pantry and saw this white tents (marquee) on top of the bridge. Nice for events such as product launches and mini-weddings. They can be fully air-conditioned too, can you believe it? :)

Cafe @ Victoria Concert Hall

Okay this posting is about this odd soup served with our western set meal, such as fish & chips, steak, chicken chop, chicken cutlet etc etc. Guess what this is?

Tom Yum Soup! It's a watered down version, and it's extremely odd to be served on a set meal with western mains. We've been there several times and it's always this Tom Yum soup. Haha.
